Depression

What is Depression?

All people will feel sad or low at times, particularly if there are big things going on around them that will naturally impact their mood. Depression is more than just feeling ‘down, blue, sad’ and is something that you can’t just snap out of and fix.

Depression can affect how you feel, think and behave. It is common for people with depression to view themselves more negatively, as it affects how you think, feel and see yourself. You might lose interest in things you usually enjoy, find it difficult to get going, have no energy or even find yourself using coping strategies like eating, drinking or smoking. Some people with depression feel as though if they ask for help or interact with their family and friends that they are a burden. Others find that doing normal day to day activities they previously did with no issue become challenging. You may even feel like sometimes life is not worth living.

People with depression sometimes feel that this is how they are always going to feel, and that things may never get better – however, speaking with a psychologist can help to identify how depression has tangled itself into your thoughts, and how to go about untangling it.

Therapy is an opportunity to move your thoughts from one of hopelessness to one of hope. No problem is too big or too small to warrant support – you are always worthy of help and you do not have to endure your feelings alone.
